My go-to place whenever in Delhi, I’ve been visiting UCH since my younger days as a teen when my grandfather used to take me and my brother to the place during afternoons on weekends to meet with his friends, all veterans from the army. Although my parents and I decided to move back to England, we chose to stay in India, he had fallen in love with the country and the beauty of its culture, of which UCH was a cherished part. He’d often mentioned how he spent his day at the restaurant, new people he met, friends he made. Now, I visit the place whenever I’m down in India to cherish our childhood days and relive my grandpa’s memory.

I recently visited United Coffee House for brunch after a gap of nearly 30 years to relive the fond memories of our frequent visits in the 70s and 80s and I was left enthralled by the atmosphere of the place once again. The beautiful colonial decor is still maintained as it was 30 years back. The same parson chairs, beautifully painted walls in beige and maroon, and soft music playing from the bar, took me right back to the days I used to sit for hours lounging with friends, bantering about politics and poetry.

When you’re at the United Coffee House, it makes you forget that you are in the hustle and bustle of the always-on-the-grind capital city of the country and transports you back to the laid-back colonial times. Always a lovely atmosphere and never a feeling of being rushed despite being a busy place, always makes for a great evening along with the food and it’d be my choice to return to whenever I'm visiting Connaught Place.

There’s a sense of timelessness that you experience at certain places, such as at museums, among the old relics and ruins that have stood the test of time. It's the same feeling of nostalgia and timelessness that you experience when you visit UCH. the place has remained a space beholding a unique charm, a hub of continental cuisine, flavours, thoughts, and culture of the world in the heart of Lutyens Delhi, the walls, the mezzanine floor, the Venetian chandelier that shines so marvellously from the ceiling.. Relaxing, charming, slow but never so dull to let boredom breed, the place is always bustling with people yet so leisurely the time moves when you’re in the envelope of its embrace. I have always been in love with the United Coffee House, and forever will be for not just food but everything it so eloquently stands for even today.

I have been visiting the place since my younger days, I’m lucky to have found some of my best palsat United Coffee House including my wife, to whom I proposed at the last table near the bar we always used to take. We used to spend hours discussing Ghalib and Geeta over endless cups of coffee and cult favourite keema samosa before heading home in the evenings. Though a lot has also changed with time, like the menu has evolved, but my favourite tomato fish curry is still the same so that’s one thing that has stayed the same among many others and the place still holds the same old charm. Me and my wife often go back to revisit those days with our friends and enjoy delicious dinner.

I remember visiting UCH for the first time with some of the party associates, I was nervous considering some of the senior party leaders were going too, and I was only a junior fellow, new to the whole scene. But it was great fun that night, my icebreaker over drinks and some great food. I’ve been a regular since with party members and friends, till the time I could eat Chicken Meringue and A’la Kiev, now I'm just old and go to enjoy my Pho and french toasts but I still enjoy the place as much and have many fond memories.
